Secure Shell, also known as SSH, is a cryptographic network protocol employed to execute commands on a remote server or to exchange data between a web server and a client. Because the information exchanged by the 2 sides is protected, a third party won't be able to intercept it, which makes SSH a favorite means of handling an Internet hosting account. The commands that may be executed depend on the type of hosting service. On a shared web server, in particular, the possibilities are limited as you won't have root access to the website hosting server, so you could simply create/move/delete files, create and unpack archives, import and export databases, and so forth. These are all actions that are executed inside the shared hosting account and do not need a higher level of access. By using a virtual or a dedicated server, you'll have the ability to set up server-side software or to restart the server or only a certain service (web server, database server, etc.). SSH commands are submitted with a command line, but if you do not use a UNIX-like OS, there are a lot of applications for other OSs, you can use to connect to the remote hosting server as well.

SSH Telnet in Website Hosting

SSH access could be permitted with a mouse click through the Hepsia Control Panel if the Linux website hosting package that you have chosen offers this function as standard. If not, you can add it via the Add Services/Upgrades section of your Control Panel and enable it at once. You will discover all the info you need inside the SSH section of the CP - the host, the port number and the username which you have to use, along with detailed Help articles in which we've listed all of the commands which you can use inside the account and examples of the syntax you have to use. The SSH password may be changed from the very same section anytime with a few mouse clicks. Assuming that SSH access is enabled, you'll also be able to connect securely through an FTP client as well. With an SFTP connection, all the files that you upload will go through an encrypted connection.

SSH Telnet in Semi-dedicated Hosting

SSH access is provided by default with some of our semi-dedicated server plans, while with others you could add it via the hosting Control Panel if required - even only for the current month. In either case, you'll be able to activate and de-activate the feature with only one mouse click from the SSH section of the Control Panel. In the same spot, you'll see the server name, the port number and the username needed to connect to our platform. You'll also find a box in which you could type in the password you want to use, because it does not need to be the same as the one you use to log into the Control Panel. For better protection, you could also change it as much as you need. A complete list of the commands which can be executed in a semi-dedicated account is available in our Knowledge Base, alongside the syntax and several instances. An extra function after SSH access is activated will be the ability to connect to your hosting space via SFTP using any FTP client that supports this sort of connections.
